My story – London
I have decided to write this article as a lot of people are asking me how I get to find a job in fashion in London just after graduated. Some of you might think that I’m just lucky but this isn’t about luck, it’s about work and taking risks.
So I moved in London a year and a half ago to do an internship as a graphic designer for a fashion company names HouseofMFG. The company was a young start-up, I was working everyday from home, and as I was the only staff with the boss I was doing a bit of everything. I used to do the social media content for the blog page on instagram, mixing inspirations and our products. I was helping on shooting, doing the design for Facebook and twitter. But mostly I was the designer. I mean fashion designer. I had never done that before. I was creating design for the new collection, doing sketches every single day.
After four months I left HouseofMFG, I needed something more ‘real’ in a proper company with an office and content to work on. Also HouseofMFG was streetwear and I wanted to work in women’s fashion. That’s how after a hundred of applications and few interviews I managed to get a job at Goddivafashion.
The job was ok, I was for the first time in my life working, this was new and oh so exciting! Got paid to do what I like, the feeling was good. I was working on website banners, landing page, newsletters, lookbook so basically a bit of everything visual. But the issue was that the role was based in Essex and I was travelling almost four hours a day to go to work. I was tired, and on top of that I was the only graphic designer of the company. I had no team. I don’t know if you can imagine, but as a junior I couldn’t improve, I was stuck, there was no one to advise me, to teach me new things and after 5months I got bored.
And from there I decided to apply for other companies. Back to that application process, hunt for the dream job again. I was applying everyday, got some interviews and I have finally been noticed by the company I really wanted: Lipsy. After three interviews, tests, I got the Junior digital designer role at Lipsy London. I’m now working in central London, enjoying a friendly environment, a good team and the job I’ve always wanted. I’m working as a graphic designer, the role is varied, tasks are different everyday and that company is always evolving so it’s challenging.
On top of that, I’m working as a street style photographer for FleekApp by Zalando. They found me on instagram a year ago and since then I work with them. The role consist in taking street style pictures of bloggers and upload them on the app, so people can shop the look online. I link every outfit to the product, give it a title and here it is.
So yes, I have the job I wanted, I live in the city I wanted and yes if you see it from outside, it has always been the dream, and my life in London was always perfect. But this is just what you can imagine looking at my social media. The reality is that I’ve been struggling, crying and I have wanted to give up so many times. But I didn’t. That’s why I’m where I am today. So if you want the same thing, fight for it, and don’t listen to people telling you that you’re a dreamer, that you’re going to fail. If you want it, you can do it!
I want to precise that for me the key is to always work in your field. ALWAYS. What’s important is your experience. So the more jobs you have in your field the more chances you have to get a better job. I would have never got the job at Lipsy without my experience at Goddiva, even if it was only 5months. What’s important is to show that fashion is your real passion.
